Plitvice Lakes National Park – What You Need to Know Before Visiting

Trust us, Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of Europe’s hidden gems. We visited during March when prices are 3x less (than during the peak season) and crowds were at an epic low. Also, our admission fee was only $8 per person.

The price includes access to all of the hiking trails, a boat ride on Lake Kozjak, and a panoramic train ride that picks you up at the finish line and takes you back to the starting point. After doing almost no research and just “showing up,” the beauty of the park blew us away. It was totally unexpected.

For those travelers without a rental car, the other best option for visiting Plitvice is to take a tour from Split, a tour from Zadar, or a tour from Zagreb. In short, we stayed in Split and were able to get a rental car for about USD 8 per day from Split Airport.

Here’s a simple fact you may not know; Croatians love to walk. As a result, Plitvice Lakes National Park is the ideal place to enjoy nature and people-watch.

Plitvice is laid out in a simple and easy-to-follow one-way direction. Furthermore, visitors begin on one end and a train will take them back to the “starting” line upon completion.

The amazing waterfalls and ever-changing landscape contribute to the fact that, without realizing it, you’ve covered approximately 5 miles of territory. The elevated boardwalk over the running waters, flowing water grass, aquatic life, and waterfalls simply melt the stresses of daily life away.

Below is a quick two-minute overview of the beauty of Plitvice.

After leaving the area, you’re sure to hear the relaxing sound of running water humming through your body and mind for hours to come. The peace and serenity of Plitvice make it one of Europe’s “must-see” national parks.

Quick Tip: No need to bring lunch necessarily. The café at the boat dock offers quite a large assortment of choices at reasonable prices. Since we brought our own sack lunches, we opted to complement our lunch with some delicious USD 1.50 cappuccinos.

  1. Hey guys – I was wondering what editing program you use? I have Premiere Elements 9 and honestly it is driving me crazy – so complicated. Any recommendations on a user friendly editing program?

    1. Hi Frank, We recommend Sony Movie Studio. We’re sort of surprised to hear about Premiere Elements though, it’s supposed to be the best of the best.
